 Abstract:  Rollin C. Hurd (1815-1874) was a lawyer and judge of the Court of Common Pleas in Mount Vernon, Ohio. His son, Frank H. Hurd (1840-1896) , was a lawyer, state legislator, and U.S. Representative, of Mount Vernon and Toledo, Ohio. The collection consists of correspondence, legal briefs, and other business papers relating to the activities of Rollin C. Hurd, including material relating to the case of Amasa Bunnell et al. vs. Henry Stoddard concerning the estate of Amos Stoddard (d. 1813) and business papers of Messrs. Warden and Burr, of Mount Vernon; also, letters to Frank H. Hurd, dealing primarily with state politics, chiefly 1866-1868.

 Abstract:  George Harrison Bender (1896-1961) was a United States Senator from Ohio (1954-1957). He also served as Ohio state senator (1921-1931), chairman of the Cuyahoga County Republican Central Committee (1938-1954), and U.S Representative (1939-1949, 1951-1954). The collection consists of correspondence, speeches, biographical accounts, newsletters, campaign and election literature, certificates, testimonials, souvenir programs, newspaper clippings, and articles by or about Bender. Includes material on prohibition, police pensions, and civil service laws, among other topics. The correspondence, primarily from constituents, also includes letters from both local and national political figures.

 Abstract:  Warner M. Bateman (1827-1897), noted Cincinnati, Ohio, lawyer, pursued a long and distinguished career not only in the field of law, but also in the world of nineteenth century Republican politics. Bateman served as an Ohio state senator 1865-1868, and as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio 1869-1877. He played a prominent role at the 1880 Republican National Convention, heading the campaign of John Sherman as Republican candidate for the Presidency of the United States. The collection consists of journals, notebooks, speeches, letters, bound volumes of correspondence, account books, dockets, checks, receipts, deeds, dividends, tax records, agreements, invitations, business cards and advertisements, notes, souvenirs, notebooks containing notes for Republican Party lectures, and eight volumes of newspaper clippings relating to legal and political matters. The bulk of the correspondence consists of letters relating to various legal, personal, political, and professional matters associated with Bateman's activities as lawyer, politician, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio (1869-1877), and manager (1880) of John Sherman's political interests. Notable correspondents include John Sherman, Salmon P. Chase, James A. Garfield, Marcus A. Hanna, Rutherford B. Hayes, William T. Sherman, and William H. Taft. A calendar of correspondence is included in Appendix I in the register to the collection.

37Title:  Political Experiences of Major General Jacob Dolson Cox

 Abstract:  Jacob Dolson Cox was a Union Army general and politician from Ohio. During the American Civil War, Cox headed the Department of the Kanawha, commanded the IX Corps of the Army of Virginia, and in 1863, assumed command of the District of Ohio and of the 3rd Division, XXIII Corps. After the war, he was Governor of Ohio (1866-1867) and was President Grant's Secretary of the Interior (1869-1870). He was also president of the Wabash Railroad and was elected to Congress in 1876. He authored Military Reminiscences of the Civil War (1900). The collection consists of a bound, ribbon copy of William Cox Cochran's(1846-1936) unfinished biography of his stepfather, Major General Jacob Dolson Cox (1828-1900). This unpublished manuscript was prepared after William Cox Cochran's death in 1936.
